Background

Vicky Ward is a British-American journalist and author who has written for Vanity Fair, the Daily Beast, CNN, and other major publications. She has covered finance, politics, and power elite stories throughout her career.

The 2003 Vanity Fair Profile

In 2002–2003, Ward reported a lengthy profile of Jeffrey Epstein for Vanity Fair. The published article — appearing in the March 2003 issue — presented Epstein as a glamorous, mysterious financier with an extraordinary network of wealthy and powerful connections. It was the first time Epstein received sustained national media attention.

Suppressed Abuse Reporting

Ward later disclosed — including in a 2019 CNN documentary and multiple interviews — that she had reported on and included in her draft accounts from women who described sexual abuse by Epstein. At least one woman, she says, was named and willing to be identified.

Vanity Fair’s then-editor-in-chief Graydon Carter removed this material before publication. Carter has offered differing accounts of why: some versions suggest evidentiary concerns; Ward has described more direct pressure. Whatever the reason, the published profile contained no mention of Epstein’s predatory behavior toward young women.

Significance

The suppression of Ward’s abuse reporting is one of the clearest cases of elite media failure in the Epstein case. The 2003 article was published when Epstein was receiving victims at his properties; the Palm Beach police investigation would not begin for another two years. Had Ward’s full account been published, victims’ advocates argue, law enforcement and public scrutiny might have come years sooner.

Graydon Carter and Vanity Fair have faced sustained criticism over the editorial decision. Carter’s successor as Vanity Fair editor-in-chief, Radhika Jones, has acknowledged the significance of the story.

Ward has continued to cover the Epstein case extensively since 2019 and has been one of the most knowledgeable journalists on the intersection of Epstein’s network, wealth, and intelligence connections.
