Ehud Barak, who served as Prime Minister of Israel from 1999 to 2001 and later as Defense Minister, had a documented relationship with Jeffrey Epstein that was publicly known before Epstein’s 2019 arrest but received significantly more attention in its aftermath. Barak also chaired a technology company called Carbyne911, a startup focused on emergency response technology that had investors with apparent Epstein connections. Visits to Epstein Properties
Barak was photographed on at least one occasion entering Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse at 9 East 71st Street. The photograph, taken in 2016, showed Barak at the entrance to the building. Barak confirmed that he had visited Epstein’s New York residence on multiple occasions. He stated he had no knowledge of any improper activity occurring there.
He was additionally reported to have traveled on at least one occasion to Epstein’s private island, Little Saint James, though the circumstances and companions of this visit were not fully established in public reporting.
Political Controversy in Israel
The disclosure of Barak’s Epstein connections caused significant political controversy in Israel, particularly given that Barak remained an active political figure — he was a prominent critic of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a potential opposition candidate — at the time the revelations became prominent.
Barak gave multiple media interviews in which he sought to characterize his relationship with Epstein as ordinary and professional. Critics in Israel challenged these characterizations and called for more complete disclosure of the financial and personal dimensions of the relationship.
Connections to Intelligence Theories
In investigative reporting examining possible intelligence dimensions of Epstein’s network, Barak’s relationship with Epstein was cited by reporters including Whitney Webb as contextually significant, given Barak’s military and intelligence background and his status as a senior Israeli security figure. These analyses raised questions without establishing definitive conclusions about whether the relationship had intelligence dimensions.
Barak’s Responses
Barak has consistently denied any wrongdoing and characterized criticism of his Epstein relationship as politically motivated. He acknowledged visiting Epstein’s properties but denied witnessing any criminal conduct. He stated that he, like others, was deceived about the true nature of Epstein’s activities.
