The Timeline
July 6, 2019 Arrest Epstein lands at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey aboard his private jet returning from Paris. Federal agents arrest him under a sealed indictment filed by the Southern District of New York (SDNY). He is transported to MCC New York.
July 8, 2019 Indictment Unsealed The SDNY unseals a two-count indictment charging sex trafficking of minors and conspiracy. The charges carry a maximum 45 years in prison.
July 15-18, 2019 Bail Hearing Prosecutors argue Epstein poses extreme flight risk (offshore assets, private jets, fake passport). Defense offers million bond with home confinement. Judge Richard Berman takes the matter under advisement.
July 18, 2019 Government Opposition Brief SDNY files comprehensive bail opposition detailing Epstein’s offshore holdings, fake passport, and history of obstructing investigations.
July 23, 2019 Bail Denied Judge Berman formally denies bail, finding Epstein poses both a flight risk and a danger to the community.
July 23-24, 2019 First “Suicide Attempt” Epstein is found in his cell semi-conscious with marks on his neck. The Bureau of Prisons records it as a possible suicide attempt or assault. Epstein reportedly tells investigators his cellmate, Nicholas Tartaglione (a former officer awaiting trial for murders), had attacked hima claim Tartaglione denies.
July 30, 2019 Suicide Watch Lifted Despite standard protocol suggesting longer monitoring, the BOP lifts Epstein’s suicide watch status. He is placed in a special housing unit under less intensive monitoring.
August 9-10, 2019 Final Night Both Epstein’s assigned guards fail to conduct required 30-minute checks for approximately six to eight hours. Security camera footage outside his cell experiences a “malfunction.” Epstein is found unresponsive by a guard at approximately 6:30 a.m. on August 10.
August 10, 2019 Death Declared Epstein is pronounced dead at New York Presbyterian-Lower Manhattan Hospital. The New York City medical examiner’s office later rules the death suicide by hanging. A second autopsy commissioned by Epstein’s estate, conducted by Dr. Michael Baden, raises questions about the findings.
BOP Response
Two guards, Tova Noel and Michael Thomas, were indicted for falsifying records. They admitted to sleeping and browsing the internet during their shift rather than conducting required checks. Their case was ultimately dismissed with prejudice in 2021 after prosecutors declined to re-prosecute.
