The Barr-Epstein Connection
Attorney General William Barr had a direct personal connection to Jeffrey Epstein that predated both men’s prominence:
Donald Barr, William Barr’s father, served as headmaster of the Dalton School in New York City in the early 1970s. In 1973, Donald Barr hired Jeffrey Epstein to teach mathematics and physics at Dalton — despite Epstein being only 20 years old and lacking a college degree.
This fact — that the AG’s father gave Epstein his career-founding job — created an obvious question about whether Barr should have recused himself from any department oversight of Epstein-related matters when he was appointed AG in February 2019, months before Epstein’s July 2019 arrest.
Barr’s Refusal to Recuse
When Epstein was arrested in July 2019, then-AG Barr stated publicly that he was not recusing himself from the case. He cited standard conflict-of-interest analysis indicating his father’s prior relationship did not require recusal under applicable DOJ guidelines.
Critics — including ethics lawyers from both Republican and Democratic administrations — argued that the appearance of conflict was sufficient justification for recusal given the extraordinary sensitivity of the case and the public interest in DOJ independence.
Oversight of the MCC After Epstein’s Death
When Epstein died at MCC New York on August 10, 2019, Barr was the chief executive responsible for the Bureau of Prisons, which operates the facility. The DOJ under Barr’s leadership oversaw the subsequent investigation into circumstances of the death.
Barr publicly stated that he was “appalled” by MCC’s failures and initially suggested foul play was not suspected. As the investigation proceeded, DOJ positions remained largely consistent with the official suicide determination.
The IG Report Timeline
The DOJ Inspector General launched a review of circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death. That review took years; its conclusions largely focused on BOP systemic failures rather than individual culpability or external interference.
Critics argued the IG process was insufficiently independent given that Barr’s DOJ was reviewing failures that occurred under his leadership.
What Was Not Investigated
Questions that critics argued were inadequately addressed:
- Why Epstein was removed from suicide watch despite meeting criteria for continued watch
- What, if anything, intelligence community assets knew about Epstein’s incarceration
- Whether political considerations played any role in case management decisions within DOJ
Historical Note
Donald Barr, William Barr’s father, also authored a 1973 science fiction novel titled Space Relations — a story involving slavery and sexual exploitation of children — in the same year he hired Epstein at Dalton. This coincidence has been widely noted in commentary on the case, though it carries no evidentiary significance.
