Epstein’s Brooklyn Origins
Jeffrey Edward Epstein was born on January 20, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in the Sea Gate neighborhood of Coney Island, a gated community in Brooklyn’s most famous beach area.
His family was lower-middle class:
- Father: Seymour G. Epstein, worked for the New York City Parks Department
- Mother: Pauline, a school aide
Early Academic Career
Epstein showed early mathematical ability and attended:
- Lafayette High School in Brooklyn (graduating early)
- Cooper Union in Manhattan (attended but did not graduate)
- New York University (attended but did not graduate)
Despite never completing a college degree, Epstein secured a position teaching:
The Dalton School Appointment
In 1974, through connections at Cooper Union, Epstein was hired to teach physics and mathematics at The Dalton School, one of New York’s most prestigious private schools. His students included the children of Wall Street executives and society figures.
At Dalton, Epstein reportedly impressed administrators with his ability to explain complex mathematical concepts. More importantly, he formed a relationship with Alan “Ace” Greenberg’s son. Alan Greenberg was the chairman of Bear Stearns.
The Bear Stearns Connection
The Dalton job effectively served as Epstein’s launching pad into finance:
- Greenberg’s son recommended Epstein to his father
- Epstein was hired at Bear Stearns in 1976
- He rose from options trader to partner in approximately four years
- He was eventually pushed out of Bear Stearns around 1981, under circumstances that remain disputed
