Early Civil Litigation (2005–2010)
2005–2007: Palm Beach Victim Civil Claims As the Palm Beach Police investigation proceeded, private attorneys began filing civil claims on behalf of identified victims. These claims were typically settled with confidentiality agreements that paid victims and required silence. The settlements were structured to avoid public scrutiny and were a key mechanism for managing reputational risk during the pre-NPA period.
2008: Post-NPA Civil Settlements The NPA included provisions enabling Epstein to settle civil claims by identified victims. Attorney Brad Edwards negotiated settlements for multiple Palm Beach-area victims. These settlements included non-disclosure agreements, limiting victims’ ability to speak publicly.
2011: Crime Victims’ Rights Act (CVRA) Lawsuit Attorneys Brad Edwards and Paul Cassell, representing Palm Beach victim Courtney Wild, filed a landmark lawsuit arguing the NPA violated the CVRA by hiding its terms from victims. This litigation proceeded slowly through the courts over years, ultimately resulting in a 2019 ruling by Judge Kenneth Marra that the NPA had violated victims’ rights — though the ruling came after Epstein’s 2019 arrest made the underlying criminal question moot.
The Giuffre v. Maxwell Lawsuit (2015–2017)
Virginia Giuffre filed a defamation lawsuit against Ghislaine Maxwell in 2015, alleging Maxwell had publicly called her a liar when she made trafficking allegations. The case generated extensive depositions, some of which named Prince Andrew, Alan Dershowitz, and others. The case settled in 2017 under terms that were initially sealed. The settlement and related materials were partially unsealed beginning in 2019.
Post-Death Estate Litigation (2019–Present)
2019: Estate Established Epstein changed his will two days before his death, establishing a trust. Attorneys Darren Indyke and Richard Kahn served as executors. The will’s timing generated scrutiny about who benefited and whether the trust structure was designed to shield assets from victim claims.
2020: Epstein Victims’ Compensation Program The estate established a voluntary compensation program, administered by former SDNY Attorney General Kenneth Feinberg. The program paid claims from victims who agreed to waive civil claims against the estate. Total payments exceeded $121 million by program close in 2021.
2021: USVI Lawsuit Against Estate The U.S. Virgin Islands, led by Attorney General Denise George, sued the Epstein estate for USVI-based trafficking and violations of USVI law. The case sought punitive damages and disgorgement of USVI tax benefits. It settled in 2022 for $105 million.
2022: JPMorgan Lawsuit Filed USVI and victim Jane Doe filed suit against JPMorgan, alleging the bank processed Epstein trafficking proceeds and failed to report suspicious activity. Settled in 2023 for $290 million.
2022: Deutsche Bank Lawsuit USVI Attorney General Sabrina Berry filed suit against Deutsche Bank for processing Epstein-related transactions. Settled in 2023 for approximately $75 million.
Post-Estate Litigation
Individual victim claims continued after the compensation program closed, with some victims pursuing litigation against Epstein associates, properties, and banks rather than the estate directly. Maxwell’s conviction also enabled some victim claims against her directly.
The total amounts paid in settlement across all civil proceedings from 2005 through 2025 exceeded $500 million.
