About the Documentary
“Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich” is a four-part Netflix documentary series released in May 2020, directed by Lisa Bryant and based on the book of the same name by James Patterson. It was one of the first major documentary treatments of the Epstein case following his death.
Content
The documentary featured testimony from multiple Epstein survivors who spoke on camera about their experiences being recruited, groomed, and abused. The series traced the arc of the case from the initial Palm Beach police investigation through the 2008 NPA and its inadequacies.
Survivor Voices
The documentary was significant for giving prominent platforms to survivors including Maria Farmer and others who described both the abuse and the long experience of not being believed or seeing justice done.
Impact
Released before the Maxwell trial, the series helped a broad public audience understand the Epstein case in detail and set the stage for the public attention to Maxwell’s arrest (July 2020) and subsequent trial.
Note on Terminology
The documentary’s title applies to the Netflix series. The HBO documentary covering some of the same subject matter was a separate production.
