What Was the Edge Foundation?
The Edge Foundation (edge.org) was an intellectual nonprofit founded by John Brockman — a literary agent who represented many of the most prominent science and technology authors of our era:
- Annual Question: The Edge “Annual Question” posed a single philosophical or scientific question to hundreds of the world’s leading thinkers. These answers were published on edge.org and in book collections.
- Edge Dinners: Exclusive dinners attended by scientists, technologists, authors, and thinkers — held in New York and London
- World Question Center: Served as a clearinghouse for big ideas
The Edge community included: Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Steven Pinker, Daniel Dennett, Richard Dawkins, Freeman Dyson, Marvin Minsky, Jared Diamond, and hundreds of others.
Epstein’s Relationship with Brockman and Edge
Epstein cultivated a relationship with John Brockman that included:
- Financial contributions to Edge Foundation activities
- Attendance at Edge events and dinners
- Being listed as an “Edgian” — a member of the Edge community
This gave Epstein access to an extraordinary network of intellectual figures.
Access the Relationship Provided
Through Edge, Epstein met and interacted with:
- Marvin Minsky — co-founder of MIT AI Lab, later accused by Giuffre
- Steven Pinker — Harvard cognitive psychologist who provided a 2008 affidavit for Epstein’s defense
- Daniel Dennett — philosopher
- Freeman Dyson — physicist
- Dozens of other Nobel laureates, MacArthur Fellows, and leading minds
The Private Jet Dimension
Brockman and Edge participants used Epstein’s private aircraft for travel on at least some occasions. Flight logs showed Edge-connected figures aboard Epstein’s planes.
Post-2019 Edge Response
Following the 2019 arrest:
- Brockman acknowledged Epstein’s funding and association
- Multiple Edge participants issued statements about their Epstein encounters
- The Edge events aspect of Epstein’s network became a significant part of MIT/Harvard media coverage of Epstein’s science relationships
Brockman’s Role as Literary Agent
Critically, Brockman was the literary agent for many of the scientists in Epstein’s network. This created potential influence: his clients’ publishing careers were managed by a figure with whom Epstein had a financial relationship.
Whether this created any pressure on scientists to maintain relationships with Epstein is not documented.
