The Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation
Registered in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation distributed funds to:
- The Program for Evolutionary Dynamics (PED) at Harvard (+ commitment)
- Various science education programs
- Individual researcher grants
- The Santa Fe Institute
- Harvard University, MIT, Cornell, NYU
The Foundation served as the formal conduit for Epstein’s philanthropic activity and the basis for his public identity as a philanthropist-philanthropist.
The Program for Evolutionary Dynamics
The PED at Harvard was Epstein’s flagship donation million to establish what became a standalone research center at Harvard. Professor Martin Nowak ran the program. The PED conducted legitimate evolutionary biology research. However, the arrangement gave Epstein:
- An office at Harvard
- Visiting professor status
- Regular access to Harvard’s facilities and community
- Credibility as a co-founder of a Harvard research center
The Santa Fe Institute
Epstein contributed to the Santa Fe Institute, a center for complexity science in New Mexico. The Institute reviewed and returned his donations following his 2019 arrest.
The Pattern
Across all cases, the pattern was consistent: Epstein’s donations were real money for real research, but the primary product Epstein was purchasing was access and legitimacynot the scientific output itself.
The Institutional Response
Following 2019:
- MIT returned and commissioned the Goodwin Procter report
- Harvard returned direct gifts; retained .1M in PED research funds
- The Epstein VI Foundation was wound down
- Most institutions publicly acknowledged failures in their donor vetting processes
