Epstein’s connection to Harvard University was substantial and multi-dimensional:

The Program for Evolutionary Dynamics
The primary vehicle for Epstein’s Harvard involvement was the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics (PED) directed by Martin Nowak:
- Epstein funded the program’s founding
- Nowak became a close associate who described Epstein as a serious intellectual
- Epstein visited the program multiple times
- The relationship between Nowak and Epstein was the most sustained of Epstein’s Harvard connections
Beyond Summers
While Larry Summers as Harvard President drew the most attention, Epstein had relationships with multiple other faculty:

The Nowak Separation
Martin Nowak, who had been most closely associated with Epstein, eventually separated from the PED. The program continued but the Epstein connection was formally severed.
Comparative Institutional Failure
The Harvard story runs parallel to the MIT Media Lab story (Joi Ito connection), raising questions about whether elite research institutions across Cambridge were simultaneously failing the same due diligence test.
