The USVI Tax Incentive
The U.S. Virgin Islands offers significant federal tax incentives for businesses establishing operations there. Epstein established legal residency and substantial corporate infrastructure in the USVI, which provided federal income tax reductions.
The Corporate Entity Web
Epstein operated through more than 30 corporate entities. This structure facilitated movement of money between entities in ways that could complicate tax assessment and also obscure true ownership and control.
The Offshore Suggestion
Some reports suggest Epstein maintained offshore accounts in jurisdictions with bank secrecy laws. The nature and extent of offshore holdings has never been definitively established from public records.
The Estate Tax Dimension
Epstein’s death without significant inheritance planning (the will was executed two days before his death) created estate tax complexity. A million estate would be subject to significant federal and USVI estate taxes.
The IRS Silence
The Internal Revenue Service has not made any public statements about investigations into Epstein’s tax affairs. Given the complexity of his financial arrangements, tax authorities would have had basis for investigation but any findings have not been disclosed.
