The Sentence
Jeffrey Epstein’s 2008 plea deal resulted in an 18-month sentence to be served at Palm Beach County Jail. He received credit for time served and ultimately served approximately 13 months.
The Work Release Arrangement
The most controversial aspect of Epstein’s sentence was the work release arrangement approved by Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw. Under this arrangement, Epstein was permitted to leave the jail six days a week, 12 hours per day, to work at a private office in Palm Beach.
What “Work Release” Looked Like
Investigative reporting found that Epstein’s work release bore little resemblance to the intent of work release programs, which are designed to allow non-violent offenders to maintain legitimate employment. Instead, Epstein had a private office in Palm Beach where he conducted his business and personal affairs.
Sheriff Bradshaw’s Defense
Sheriff Bradshaw defended the arrangement, saying Epstein qualified for work release as a non-violent sex offender and that protocol was followed.
Wider Criticism
The arrangement was widely criticized as a further example of how Epstein’s wealth and connections produced dramatically different treatment than any ordinary defendant would receive.
