Staley’s Role at JPMorgan
While at JPMorgan, Staley was in a position to advocate for Epstein’s continued status as a client despite internal compliance concerns. JPMorgan’s compliance staff repeatedly flagged suspicious transactions and patterns with the Epstein accounts. Those flags were not acted upon in ways that would have ended the relationship.
When JPMorgan eventually terminated the Epstein relationship in 2013, it was after years of internal debate, and the bank later faced significant legal liability for the years the relationship continued.
JPMorgan’s Lawsuit Against Staley
In an unusual legal move, JPMorgan — as part of its settlement and self-protective posture — filed its own lawsuit against Jes Staley after its 2023 settlement, alleging that Staley had misled the bank about the nature of his relationship with Epstein. Staley denied the allegations.
The Barclays Chapter
Staley later became CEO of Barclays. During his tenure there, his Epstein connections came under scrutiny from UK and US regulators. He ultimately resigned from Barclays in 2021 amid an investigation into his characterization of his relationship with Epstein.
