The more significant institutional issue at MIT was not the amounts donated but how they were handled. Joi Ito, Director of the MIT Media Lab, accepted Epstein donations after the 2008 conviction and arranged for them to be recorded in ways that obscured Epstein’s identity as donor.

Ronan Farrow’s 2019 investigation for The New Yorker revealed the details of how Epstein’s Media Lab donations had been handled. The reporting included internal MIT documents and communications that showed awareness of the concealment.
Joi Ito’s Resignation
Following the Farrow reporting, Joi Ito resigned as Media Lab Director. Several MIT faculty members who had co-opted their research through Epstein funding also resigned from their affiliated positions.
