During Epstein’s ownership (1998–2019), Little Saint James underwent significant construction, transforming from a largely undeveloped island into a private compound.
Main Structures
Primary Residence
A large multi-story main house on the island’s highest point. The residence contained:
- Bedrooms and entertainment spaces
- Dedicated staff quarters
- A commanding view of the Caribbean
Guest Cottages
Multiple smaller cottages for overnight guests
Service Facilities
- Desalination plant (fresh water supply)
- Power generation facilities
- Dock and boat storage
- Helipad for helicopter access
The “Temple” Building
The most widely discussed structure is a small building with distinctive blue and white stripes and a golden dome topped with owl statues. Aerial photographs of this structure circulated widely online after Epstein’s arrest.
What is it?: The building has been the subject of intense speculation. Practical explanations include:
- A music or entertainment pavilion
- A storage facility
- A gatehouse or security structure
No court documentation has specifically described criminal activity occurring in this structure.
Construction Controversies
USVI environmental regulators cited Epstein’s construction for:
- Unauthorized land clearing
- Potential coral reef damage from dock expansion
- Building without proper permits
These violations were noted during his 2008 plea deal period.
Post-Epstein
After Epstein’s death, the US Virgin Islands government condemned both Little Saint James and Great Saint James. Little Saint James was ultimately sold in 2024 as part of estate liquidation.
