J. Epstein and Company
Jeffrey Epstein’s financial management company was named J. Epstein and Company. By his own description, the firm exclusively served clients with billion or more in net worth.
The Office
In addition to operations at his Manhattan townhouse, Epstein had a separate financial office in New York. The precise address and staffing levels at various points varied; the firm did not have the physical footprint of a conventional large wealth management operation.
No Regulatory Registration
A striking aspect of J. Epstein and Company was that it was not registered as an investment advisor with the SEC. An entity managing the scale of assets Epstein claimed to manage would normally be required to register and would be subject to regulatory oversight. The absence of registration was one of the clues suggesting his wealth management operation was not what it appeared.
The Wexner Arrangements
The firm’s most documented relationships were with Les Wexner. The scope of Wexner’s financial delegation to Epstein including a power of attorney represented an unusual degree of trust.
Staff
Epstein’s financial operation employed relatively few staff relative to the scale of his claimed AUM (assets under management), further suggesting the business was not a conventional wealth management firm.
