Meeting in New York
Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell met in New York in 1991. Maxwell had just experienced the catastrophic death of her father and the collapse of his business empire. She needed social and financial reinvention; Epstein offered both wealth and New York social access.
Romantic Phase
Initially their relationship appeared to be romantic. They were photographed together at elite social events throughout the 1990s. Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse became Ghislaine’s primary social base in the United States.
From Romance to Partnership
The romantic phase gave way to a more complex partnership. Maxwell became central to the operation of Epstein’s household and social life. Victims allege that Maxwell played an active recruitment role: she was the one who initially approached many young women, often presenting herself as a mentor figure.
Maxwell’s Alleged Roles
Victims described Maxwell as playing multiple roles in the abuse operation: recruiting victims, normalizing the situation, being present during abuse, and managing Epstein’s network of female staff. Maxwell disputed all these characterizations.
The Conviction
Ghislaine Maxwell was convicted in December 2021 on five of six counts including sex trafficking and was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison. She continues to maintain her innocence.
