Epstein’s Arrival at MCC
Jeffrey Epstein arrived at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in Lower Manhattan on July 6, 2019, following his arrest at Teterboro Airport. MCC is a federal detention facility that has housed numerous high-profile defendants over the years.
Initial Placement and Conditions
Upon admission, Epstein was placed in the Special Housing Unit (SHU) — a higher-security area — given the high-profile nature of his case and concerns about his safety:
- He was initially held with a cellmate (later identified as Nicholas Tartaglione, a former police officer awaiting murder trial)
- The cell conditions at MCC were described as harsh compared to the privilege of Epstein’s prior life
- MCC was understaffed, with guards frequently working overtime
The July 23 Incident
On July 23, 2019, Epstein was found in his cell with marks on his neck. This was:
- Classified either as a suicide attempt or an assault by his cellmate (accounts differed)
- Epstein claimed he had been choked by Tartaglione; Tartaglione denied this
- It led to Epstein being placed on suicide watch
Following the July 23 incident, Epstein was placed in a special observation cell with enhanced monitoring requirements.
Removal from Suicide Watch (July 29)
On July 29, 2019 — just six days after the suspicious incident — Epstein was removed from suicide watch and returned to regular Special Housing Unit placement.
The decision to remove him from suicide watch has been criticized extensively:
- Suicide watch protocols typically require longer observation periods after self-harm incidents
- Epstein should have had a psychological evaluation before removal
- The premature removal was cited as a key factor enabling his death
The Night of August 9–10, 2019
In the early hours:
- Guards Tova Noel and Michael Thomas were assigned to check on Epstein every 30 minutes
- The guards failed to make required rounds for approximately 3 hours
- Both guards allegedly fell asleep or browsed the internet during their shifts
- Both falsified log entries claiming they had made rounds
The Death
Epstein was found unresponsive at approximately 6:30 AM on August 10, 2019. MCC staff called 911; Epstein was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Camera Failures
Two surveillance cameras outside Epstein’s cell produced footage that was deemed “unusable” due to technical malfunctions. The FBI investigated and could not recover the footage.
Guard Prosecutions
Guards Tova Noel and Michael Thomas were indicted on charges of falsifying records. Both eventually pleaded guilty in 2021 to making false entries. They received probation and avoided prison sentences.
