Overview
Among Jeffrey Epstein’s various scientific interests, neuroscience held a particular place. He expressed a strong interest in the science of the brain, human cognition, and consciousness — interests that connected to his broader fascination with human potential and, in some accounts, to his eugenic thinking about cognitive enhancement.
Funded Researchers
Epstein provided direct financial support to neuroscientists and brain researchers at multiple institutions. These included researchers at Harvard, MIT, and affiliated institutes who worked on questions relating to neural circuitry, consciousness, and cognitive function.
Some of these scientists later acknowledged the funding and expressed regret, particularly those who continued accepting Epstein money after his 2008 conviction.
The Consciousness Studies Connection
Epstein had a documented interest in questions of consciousness and had conversations with philosophers and scientists working on the “hard problem” of consciousness — why subjective experience exists and how the brain generates it. This put him in contact with academics including those connected to the Santa Fe Institute’s work on complex systems.
The Eugenic Connection
Multiple scientists and intellectuals who met with Epstein reported that he seemed to want to connect neuroscience and genetics in ways that suggested an interest in enhancement or selective reproduction. His expressed desire to “spread his DNA” and his interest in eugenics-adjacent thinking had a neuroscience dimension in his conversations with brain researchers.
Post-2019 Accountability Reviews
Several neuroscience-adjacent institutions reviewed their Epstein connections after 2019. Researchers who had received funding through Epstein-connected channels were asked to disclose and return funds in some cases.
Significance
Epstein’s neuroscience funding was part of the same strategy as his physics, mathematics, and evolution funding: building a reputation as a serious science patron through targeted financial relationships with researchers who could advance that image.
