On November 16, 2019, Prince Andrew, Duke of York, gave a live one-hour interview to BBC Newsnight journalist Emily Maitlis. Intended as a damage-control move following intense media scrutiny of his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, the interview instead became one of the most catastrophic self-inflicted reputational failures in modern royal history.

Virginia Giuffre had publicly alleged that she had been trafficked to Prince Andrew on three occasions: at Ghislaine Maxwell’s London home, at Epstein’s Palm Beach mansion, and at his Manhattan townhouse. The famous photograph of Andrew with his arm around a teenage Giuffre, with Maxwell visible in the background, had circulated widely. By late 2019, Epstein was dead, Maxwell had gone into hiding, and the Newsnight team had been pressing for an interview for months.
Key Claims and Their Problems
“I was at Pizza Express in Woking”: Andrew claimed that on the specific date Giuffre alleged the London encounter (March 10, 2001), he had taken his daughter Princess Beatrice to a Pizza Express birthday party in Woking, Surrey. Nothing in the royal diary confirmed this, and the specificity of the claim — naming the restaurant years later — struck many observers as implausibly precise.
“I don’t sweat”: Andrew claimed he had a medical condition acquired in the Falklands War that prevented him from sweating profusely, directly contradicting Giuffre’s account that he was “sweaty.” Medical experts widely noted there is no such lasting condition from combat.
“I have no recollection of meeting her”: Despite the photograph showing him with his arm around Giuffre, Andrew said he had no recollection of meeting her and could not explain the photograph.
Empathy for victims: When asked whether he regretted his friendship with Epstein, Andrew stated his focus on victims was something he lacked — an answer widely condemned as cold and self-serving.
He described Epstein as “a helpful contact”: Rather than expressing moral condemnation, Andrew described Epstein’s contacts and connections as useful, further damaging his credibility.
Immediate Fallout
Within 72 hours of the interview, Andrew announced his withdrawal from royal duties. Multiple sponsors and charity patrons began severing ties. By the following week, he had officially stepped back from public duties “for the foreseeable future.”
University of Huddersfield rescinded an honorary degree. Dozens of charities affiliated with the Pitch@Palace initiative withdrew. His daughters Beatrice and Eugenie reportedly expressed embarrassment. Media outlet after media outlet described the interview as a masterclass in what not to do.
Legal Aftermath
The interview’s explicit denials became evidentiary fodder in the subsequent civil lawsuit filed by Virginia Giuffre. Andrew had publicly stated things under camera that contradicted sworn depositions and victim accounts, limiting his legal maneuvering room. His legal team’s subsequent attempts to have the case dismissed — including arguing a prior 2009 settlement between Giuffre and Epstein barred her from suing him — ultimately failed.
In February 2022, Andrew reached a settlement with Giuffre for a reported sum believed to be in the range of £10–12 million. He did not admit liability but issued a charitable donation and an expression of “regret.”
Significance
The interview demonstrated how closely Epstein’s network remained tied to the highest levels of global power. It also illustrated the limits of royal institutional protection: aggressive media and civil litigation eventually forced a reckoning no amount of spin could prevent. Emily Maitlis was widely praised; Andrew has not spoken publicly on the subject since.
