Overview
Prince Andrew, Duke of York, maintained a documented friendship with Jeffrey Epstein over many years. His association became internationally prominent following Virginia Giuffre’s allegations, a much-criticized BBC interview, and ultimately a civil settlement. He resigned from royal duties in 2019 and has not returned to public life.
The Relationship
Prince Andrew was introduced to Epstein through Ghislaine Maxwell, who had a longstanding relationship with Andrew that predated her association with Epstein. The two men were documented meeting on multiple occasions from the late 1990s onward, including visits to Epstein’s properties in New York, Palm Beach, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
After Epstein’s 2008 conviction, Prince Andrew continued to associate with him publicly. A photograph showing them walking together in Central Park in 2010 became one of the most reproduced images associated with the case.
Virginia Giuffre’s Allegations
Virginia Giuffre alleged that she was trafficked to Prince Andrew on multiple occasions, including when she was 17. Her account included a specific description of a meeting at Maxwell’s London residence, a photograph of Prince Andrew with his arm around her (widely published), and other detailed allegations.
Prince Andrew denied all allegations against him, stating he had no memory of meeting Giuffre and disputing the circumstances she described.
The 2019 BBC Interview
In November 2019, Prince Andrew gave a lengthy interview to BBC journalist Emily Maitlis that was widely assessed as a public relations catastrophe. His defenses of his behavior, his characterization of his memory, and his apparent lack of expressed empathy for victims drew enormous criticism.
Following the interview, he announced he would step back from royal duties. Sponsors and charitable affiliations distanced themselves from him.
Civil Lawsuit and Settlement
Giuffre filed a civil lawsuit against Prince Andrew in a U.S. federal court in 2021. Andrew contested the lawsuit on jurisdictional and procedural grounds. In February 2022, the parties announced a settlement for a reported sum exceeding $10 million, with no admission of wrongdoing by Prince Andrew.
The settlement included an Andrew contribution to Giuffre’s anti-trafficking advocacy.
Current Status
Andrew has not returned to royal duties. He lost his honorary military titles and HRH styling as a working royal. He remains a private individual and has not given public interviews since the BBC appearance.
In 2024, Giuffre voluntarily dismissed remaining civil proceedings against him; the reasons were not publicly disclosed in full but were connected to the interpretation of an earlier settlement deed.
