Andrew’s Relationship with Ghislaine Maxwell
Prince Andrew and Ghislaine Maxwell had known each other since at least the early 1990s, moving in overlapping social circles among British aristocracy, international finance, and the transatlantic wealthy elite. Maxwell’s father Robert Maxwell, before his death in 1991, had social connections across the British establishment, and Ghislaine had been part of a social world that included royalty.
The friendship between Andrew and Maxwell was longstanding and close. When Ghislaine’s social and business life became associated with Jeffrey Epstein — likely in the early 1990s — Andrew was drawn into Epstein’s orbit through the Maxwell connection. The three traveled and socialized together across multiple continents for years.
Royal Lodge, Windsor Great Park
Prince Andrew resides at Royal Lodge, a grace-and-favor residence in Windsor Great Park provided by the Crown. The property, set in extensive grounds outside Windsor, served as his primary UK home.
Court documents and public reports, including in Virginia Giuffre’s sworn testimony, placed Ghislaine Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein at various UK locations associated with Andrew’s social world. The specific question of whether any abuse alleged by Giuffre occurred at Royal Lodge has not been specifically adjudicated in any public court proceeding.
Giuffre’s testimony placed one sexual encounter with Andrew in London — specifically at a house associated with Epstein and Maxwell — and stated she had seen Andrew at social gatherings that included his Royal Lodge residence. The locations referenced in her testimony included both the Royal Lodge and a London townhouse associated with Maxwell.
The Epstein-Andrew New York Connection
The most extensively documented aspect of the Epstein-Andrew relationship was a visit Andrew made to Epstein’s New York mansion in December 2010 — after Epstein’s 2008 conviction and sex offender registration. Andrew was photographed walking with Epstein in Central Park. The images, published in 2011, generated immediate controversy given that Epstein was a registered sex offender.
Andrew’s visit to New York after the conviction was particularly criticized because it suggested a continuation of the social relationship despite knowledge of Epstein’s crimes. The Palace issued a statement describing the visit as a mistake.
Palace Responses
Buckingham Palace issued a series of increasingly defensive statements over the years as the allegations against Andrew accumulated. Initial responses characterized Andrew’s relationship with Epstein as a friendship of which he was not ashamed, while distancing him from any knowledge of Epstein’s criminal activities.
Following Giuffre’s legal allegations and the filing of the Virginia Giuffre v. Prince Andrew civil lawsuit in 2021, the Palace’s communications became more directed toward legal strategy than public relations.
The BBC Interview and Its Consequences
In November 2019, Andrew gave an extended interview to BBC Newsnight in which he denied having any sexual encounter with Virginia Giuffre and stated he had no recollection of ever meeting her. The interview was widely assessed — including within the Palace — as a serious communications failure that increased rather than reduced public concern about Andrew’s conduct.
Following the BBC interview, Andrew stepped back from royal duties.
The Civil Settlement
In February 2022, Prince Andrew and Virginia Giuffre reached an out-of-court settlement of her civil lawsuit. The settlement’s terms were confidential, but Giuffre issued a statement accepting Andrew’s commitment to support organizations fighting sexual exploitation of children and acknowledging that he could “demonstrate that he is a man of his word.” Andrew did not admit to any of the allegations in the complaint.
