The Grooming Framework
Expert testimony at the Ghislaine Maxwell trial described the Epstein operation in terms of a systematic grooming process. Grooming is the process by which abusers prepare victims for exploitation, breaking down boundaries gradually over time.
Initial Contact
Victims were typically first contacted by a young woman from Epstein’s social circle, often by Ghislaine Maxwell herself. The initial contact was friendly and apparently innocent an invitation to a social event, an offer of help with modeling or school.
Normalization
The massage framing was central to the normalization process: asking a 14-year-old for a massage is inappropriate, but the request was made in a context where this had been presented as a normal, professional activity. The environment normalized behavior that was abusive.
Isolation
Many victims were in vulnerable circumstances that made isolation easier: they came from families with financial difficulties, were pursuing dreams that Epstein and Maxwell had shown they could help with, and were geographically or socially isolated.
Control After Initial Abuse
After the first assault, victims were controlled through a combination of shame, fear, financial gifts (which created complicity), and the power of Epstein’s social position. Many victims did not immediately conceptualize what had happened as abuse.
