Why Hawking attended:

After Epstein’s 2019 arrest, Hawking’s foundation noted the visit dated to 2006 and emphasized Hawking had no knowledge of Epstein’s criminal activities.

Available evidence suggests Epstein continued to host scientific visitors and gatherings at his island and New York properties after his 2008 conviction, though with somewhat reduced profile. The Harvard and MIT donations continued post-2008.
