Jeffrey Epstein worked hard to cultivate a reputation as a serious patron of science and intellectual discourse. One strategy was participation in and funding of prestigious scientific conferences and institutes, including the Santa Fe Institute (SFI), one of the world’s leading centers for complexity science.
The Santa Fe Institute Connection
The Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico was one of several elite scientific institutions that received funding and attention from Epstein. SFI brings together researchers from across disciplines to study complex systems. Epstein attended SFI-related events and was involved in the network of major donors and affiliated thinkers.
After Epstein’s arrest in 2019, SFI conducted a review of its relationship with him. The institute acknowledged that Epstein had been associated with SFI events and that some funding had flowed through his connections, and committed to transparency about those relationships.
Broader Conference Circuit
Epstein’s strategy of attending scientific conferences served multiple purposes:

- Legitimacy laundering: Being seen alongside Nobel laureates and prominent researchers lent apparent credibility to his claims of being a science financier

Edge Foundation Gatherings
The Edge Foundation, run by literary agent John Brockman, was perhaps the most prominent vehicle for Epstein’s intellectual networking. Edge gatherings at exclusive retreats hosted scientists, intellectuals, and technologists and were a key venue through which Epstein met figures including various Harvard and MIT professors.
Post-2019 Accounting
Following Epstein’s arrest and death, various institutions reviewed their relationships. The pattern that emerged showed a consistent strategy of donation, access, and association-building across dozens of elite scientific organizations.
