Both Jeffrey Epstein and Donald Trump were prominent figures in the Palm Beach social world during the late 1980s and 1990s. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club, a historically significant Palm Beach estate converted into an exclusive private club in 1995, became one of the central social venues of this world. Epstein, who owned a separate Palm Beach estate, was a Mar-a-Lago member and regular attendee at Trump parties and social events.
The two men were, by their own and contemporaries’ accounts, social acquaintances during this period. They shared access to overlapping circles of wealthy New Yorkers and Floridians, attended the same parties, and encountered each other at social events.
Mar-a-Lago Interactions
Epstein was a member of the Mar-a-Lago club, which gave him regular access to events at the estate. Guest lists for Mar-a-Lago events during the 1990s have been referenced in court proceedings and media investigations. Photographs from social events — including at least one well-circulated photograph of Trump and Epstein together at a 1992 party — document the social relationship.
Ghislaine Maxwell was also photographed at Mar-a-Lago events and Trump-associated social gatherings during this period. Her social access to Trump venues was sufficiently regular that photographs of her with Trump family members, as well as with Epstein and Trump together, have been discussed in media coverage of the case.
Trump’s 2002 Statement About Epstein
In a 2002 profile of Epstein in New York magazine, Donald Trump gave a prominent quote: “I’ve known Jeff for fifteen years. Terrific guy. He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it — Jeffrey enjoys his life.”
This statement, made publicly and without any apparent awareness of its implications, became one of the most quoted items in media coverage connecting Trump and Epstein. The comment about women being “on the younger side” took on particular significance after the full scope of Epstein’s victimization of young girls became public.
Trump’s Later Distance and Fallout
After Epstein’s 2019 arrest, Trump publicly characterized Epstein as “not a fan” of his, stated that he had had a “falling out” with Epstein some years earlier, and declined to characterize them as close. White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham stated in July 2019 that Trump had actually “thrown Epstein out” of Mar-a-Lago after Epstein behaved inappropriately with the daughter of a member.
This account — that Trump had banned Epstein from Mar-a-Lago — was partially corroborated by a civil lawsuit filed by an alleged victim who stated she had been recruited by Epstein from Mar-a-Lago, which Trump’s team cited as supporting the ban narrative.
The Flight Log Question
Epstein’s flight logs do not appear to document Donald Trump as a passenger on the “Lolita Express,” a fact that Trump has cited in denying close connection to Epstein’s travel operation. Trump owned his own aircraft and would have had no need to use Epstein’s jet.
Historical Assessment
The factual record establishes that Epstein and Trump were social acquaintances during the late 1980s and 1990s through Palm Beach and New York social circles, that Trump gave a flattering public quote about Epstein in 2002, and that the relationship appeared to have cooled before Epstein’s 2008 conviction.
