USVI Criminal Investigation Overview
The US Virgin Islands Attorney General launched one of the most aggressive post-death legal actions against Epstein’s estate. The territory where Epstein’s private island — Little Saint James — was located had jurisdiction over crimes committed on its soil.
Charges and Civil Action
The USVI filed a civil lawsuit against Epstein’s estate in 2020, alleging:
- Sex trafficking of minors on USVI territory
- Operating a criminal enterprise for over two decades
- Money laundering through USVI-registered companies
- Using Virgin Islands Economic Development Commission tax benefits to facilitate trafficking
The case alleged Epstein used USVI tax incentives — saving approximately $300 million in taxes — while operating a trafficking operation on the islands.
JPMorgan and Deutsche Bank Lawsuits
The USVI AG also sued:
- JPMorgan Chase — for knowingly facilitating Epstein’s sex trafficking through banking services (settled 2023 for ~$75 million)
- Deutsche Bank — for providing banking services despite red flags (settled 2023 for ~$75 million)
Denise George Firing
USVI Attorney General Denise George was fired in January 2023, days after filing the JPMorgan lawsuit. Her dismissal raised questions about political interference in the prosecution of Epstein’s financial network.
Outcome
The civil action against Epstein’s estate resulted in a $105 million settlement in 2024, with funds distributed to victims through a compensation program.
