Vulnerability Factors
Victims were often from families experiencing financial difficulties. The promise of money for a massage, presented as easy modeling work, was particularly appealing in households where money was tight.
Grooming Trajectory
Victims typically experienced gradual escalation. Initial encounters set up follow-up visits; the requests became increasingly sexual over time. By the time victims understood what was being asked of them, they were often already compromised.
The Significance of the Minor Status
That most victims were minors at time of first contact is legally significant: it is what elevates the conduct from prostitution (which Epstein’s lawyers argued it was) to sex trafficking, which is a federal crime.
