Who Was Targeted
The victims identified in the Palm Beach investigation were predominantly young women from working-class or economically struggling families in the Palm Beach area. They were not from the wealthy social circles Epstein moved in as a social equal.
Economic Vulnerability
Economic vulnerability was a selection factor. The offer of -300 for a massage was significant money for a teenager from a family facing economic pressures. The offer was presented as modeling work or personal assistance.
Lack of Social Power
The significant age and wealth differential between Epstein and his victims created profound power imbalances. An adult billionaire with a Manhattan townhouse and private island was not someone a 15-year-old from a struggling family had the perspective or resources to confront.
International Victims
European victims, brought through Jean-Luc Brunel’s modeling operations, faced additional vulnerability: they were in a foreign country, may have had limited English, and were dependent on their modeling agency contact (Brunel) who was connected to the trafficking operation.
Long-Term Impact
Victims described lasting psychological harm, difficulty in relationships, and feelings of shame and complicity that prevented them from coming forward for years. The grooming process was specifically designed to create these feelings.
