The Interview Process
Detective Joseph Recarey conducted the primary victim interviews in the investigation. Over approximately 1218 months, he interviewed dozens of young women who had been victimized at Epstein’s Palm Beach mansion.
Consistent Patterns
Across interviews from different victims who did not know each other, consistent patterns emerged:
- Initial recruitment through a peer or acquaintance who had previously visited
- A massage request that escalated to sexual contact
- Payment in cash at the end of the visit ( initially)
- Instructions about returning and referring others
The Corroboration Problem
Prosecutors faced challenges because many encounters occurred one-on-one, with no independent witness. Epstein’s attorneys successfully argued that some victim accounts would be challenged at trial.
The Record That Remained
The interview documents became the foundation for subsequent litigation, including the CVRA lawsuits and the Maxwell trial, where several victims testified about events consistent with what they had described to Recarey in 20052006.
