Overview
Virginia Giuffre (née Roberts) was recruited into Epstein’s network around age 16 and became arguably the most consequential figure in the post-2008 effort to hold Epstein and his associates accountable. Her civil litigation, advocacy, and public testimony contributed directly to the legal proceedings against Maxwell and Prince Andrew.
Recruitment and Abuse
Giuffre has testified and stated publicly that she was approached at Mar-a-Lago by Ghislaine Maxwell around age 16, when she was working as a spa changing room attendant. Maxwell recruited her into what was represented as a position of legitimate employment.
Giuffre was subsequently trafficked by Epstein and Maxwell to wealthy and powerful individuals, according to her account. She has named multiple individuals in legal proceedings, the most prominent being Prince Andrew.
Civil Lawsuit Against Maxwell
Giuffre filed a civil defamation lawsuit against Ghislaine Maxwell in 2015, after Maxwell publicly denied Giuffre’s claims and made statements Giuffre argued were defamatory. The litigation produced the voluminous document base that was largely sealed until the 2024 unsealing.
The case settled in 2017 for $1 million. The settlement deed, released in the 2024 unsealing, contained language indicating Giuffre was resolving claims not only against Maxwell but potentially against other individuals from the network — language that would become significant in the Prince Andrew litigation.
Civil Lawsuit Against Prince Andrew
Giuffre sued Prince Andrew in a U.S. federal court in 2021, alleging he had sexually assaulted her when she was 17, on multiple occasions while she was being trafficked by Epstein. Prince Andrew denied the allegations.
The case settled in February 2022 for a reported sum in excess of $10 million. Prince Andrew made no admission of misconduct. He resigned from royal duties and has not returned to public life.
Dismissal From the Civil Case (2024)
In late 2024, Giuffre voluntarily dismissed the remaining civil action against Prince Andrew, with the court’s acceptance. There was speculation about the reasons; reports suggested the earlier 2017 settlement deed’s language may have played a role in the litigation calculus.
Advocacy Work
Giuffre has been a prominent public advocate for trafficking survivors, speaking at public events, cooperating with journalists, and testifying about the failures of the criminal justice system. She founded an advocacy organization and has campaigned for legislative reforms.
Significance
More than any other individual, Giuffre’s persistence in pursuing civil litigation and speaking publicly transformed the Epstein case from a resolved 2008 prosecution into the massive public reckoning that unfolded between 2015 and 2024.
