The Timing
Jeffrey Epstein signed a new will on August 8, 2019 two days before his death on August 10, 2019. The timing raised immediate questions from victims’ attorneys and legal observers.
The Estate Value
Epstein’s assets at death were estimated at approximately million, including his real estate (Manhattan townhouse, Palm Beach mansion, Zorro Ranch, Little Saint James), financial assets, and other holdings.
The Trust Structure
The will transferred Epstein’s assets into a trust, The 1953 Alligator Trust (named for his birth year). Trust structures can offer greater protection from creditors than estates held in a decedent’s own name.
Victims’ Attorneys’ Response
Attorneys representing Epstein’s victims immediately sought to challenge the trust structure, arguing it was designed to frustrate their clients’ civil claims. Litigation over the trust and its assets was filed in the Virgin Islands.
The Executors Named
Epstein named Darren Indyke and Richard Kahn as executors of the estate. Both are attorneys who had worked with Epstein. Their management of the estate became subject to scrutiny.
The Compensation Fund
The estate ultimately established a victim compensation fund that paid out tens of millions of dollars to hundreds of claimants.
