The Sentence Structure
Jeffrey Epstein was sentenced to 18 months in Palm Beach County jail in June 2008. He served 13 months of that sentence before being placed on probation. During that 13 months, Epstein was granted:
- Work release status: allowing him to leave the facility
- 12 hours per day, 6 days per week off-campus
- He spent those hours at his Palm Beach office
Why This Was Extraordinary
Work release programs typically apply to inmates who need to maintain employmentfactory workers, construction workersfor whom incarceration would cause job loss. They are not typically granted to multi-hundred-millionaires with no genuine employment need. The circumstances under which Epstein’s work release was approved have never been fully explained publicly.
The Investigation
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducted an investigation into the work release program and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office employees who supervised Epstein:
- Investigators found that Epstein’s work release was not properly documented
- Guards were found to have engaged in conduct inconsistent with program rules
- Some investigators suggested the program provided cover for ongoing criminal activity
Julie Brown’s Role
The Miami Herald’s 2018 investigation devoted significant attention to the work release program, obtaining records that showed the full scope of Epstein’s daily freedom during his ostensible incarceration. This reporting was particularly effective in illustrating how lenient his actual sentence was.
Guards’ Fate
Two Palm Beach County jail guards were indicted in connection with their oversight of Epstein’s work release program. Both ultimately resolved their cases through plea agreements.
