The 2006 Conference on Little Saint James
In 2006, Jeffrey Epstein organized a scientific conference on his private island, Little Saint James, in the US Virgin Islands.
This was the same year that:

- Epstein was under active investigation for sex crimes involving minors

The conference assembled physics and complexity science figures. Stephen Hawking was among the attendees.
How Hawking Got There
Hawking (1942-2018) had Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), diagnosed at age 21. By 2006, he:
- Was almost entirely paralyzed and communicated through a speech synthesizer
- Required 24-hour nursing care
- Used a wheelchair customized with specialized electronics
- Traveled with a significant entourage of nurses and technical support
Getting to Little Saint James required:
- Charter travel to St. Thomas, USVI
- A short boat transfer to the island
- Getting Hawking and his equipment to the island’s facility

A subsequently widely-reported detail: Hawking was taken in Epstein’s submarine to the ocean floor near the island, a notable recreational activity for one of the world’s most mobility-limited individuals.

Epstein actively used his connection to Hawking as credentialing:
- Being associated with “the greatest mind alive” significantly enhanced Epstein’s scientific legitimacy claims
