The Official Account
Jeffrey Epstein was found unresponsive in his cell at Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in Manhattan at approximately 6:30 AM on August 10, 2019. He was 66 years old.
New York City Medical Examiner Dr. Barbara Sampson ruled his death a suicide by hanging on August 16, 2019. The determination was based on:
- Ligature marks on the neck consistent with hanging
- Fractures to the hyoid bone and throat cartilage
- No evidence of restraint on hands or feet suggesting a struggle
- No defensive wounds
The Physical Evidence
Bone Fractures
The autopsy revealed fractures to Epstein’s hyoid bone and other neck structures. This finding became central to the controversy:
- Pro-suicide interpretation: Hyoid fractures can occur in hangings, particularly in older adults where the bone has calcified and becomes more brittle
- Pro-murder interpretation: Forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden (hired by Epstein’s brother Mark) stated that the fracture pattern was more consistent with ligature strangulation (murder) than self-suspension
The Camera Failures
Two cameras outside Epstein’s cell malfunctioned on the night of his death. FBI analysis found the footage was “unusable.” This coincidence has never been satisfactorily explained.
The Removal from Suicide Watch
Epstein had been on suicide watch after a July 23, 2019 incident where he was found with marks on his neck. He was removed from suicide watch on July 29, just days before his death.
Staff Failures
The two guards assigned to check on Epstein:
- Failed to check on him for approximately 3 hours before he was found
- Falsified records showing they had conducted checks
- Both pleaded guilty to record falsification in 2021
What the Prosecution Said
Prosecutors stated multiple times that they believe Epstein died by suicide, noting:
- His motivation (facing decades in prison)
- Physical evidence was consistent with hanging
- No evidence of third-party involvement in his cell
The Murder Theories
Multiple murder theories have been proposed:
- Intelligence services ordered his death to prevent him from revealing information
- Wealthy associates arranged his death through prison contacts
- His cellmate (Nicholas Tartaglione) was involved (strongly denied by Tartaglione)
None of these theories have been supported by publicly available evidence.
