Ghislaine Maxwell at FCI Tallahassee
Following her June 28, 2022 sentencing to 20 years in federal prison, Ghislaine Maxwell was assigned to FCI Tallahassee — a minimum-security federal correctional institution in Tallahassee, Florida.
The Facility
FCI Tallahassee is a federal minimum-correctional institution that houses female inmates. It is part of the Bureau of Prisons’ Southeast Regional complex. The facility is characterized as minimum-security, consistent with Maxwell’s sentence and lack of violent offense history.
Unlike the conditions Maxwell faced during pretrial detention at MDC Brooklyn — which she and her attorneys described as harsh, with limited light, poor food, and inadequate conditions — FCI Tallahassee is a lower-custody facility.
Media Interviews From Prison
Maxwell has given phone interviews to media from FCI Tallahassee. Most notable:
- A 2023 interview with Jeremy Kyle (British journalist and television presenter) in which Maxwell discussed her case, her health, and her perspective on the trial
- In these interviews she has denied wrongdoing and characterized her prosecution as unjust
The interviews attracted significant public attention but also criticism from victim advocates who argued Maxwell was using media access to rehabilitate her image.
The Appeal
Maxwell filed an appeal arguing that juror Scotty David’s failure to disclose his prior sexual abuse experience during jury selection constituted grounds for a new trial. The Second Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the appeal in September 2024, upholding the conviction.
Maxwell’s legal team may continue to pursue post-conviction remedies, though the available grounds are increasingly limited following the Second Circuit ruling.
Projected Release
With good behavior credits under federal sentencing guidelines, Maxwell’s projected release would be in the early 2040s — when she would be in her late 70s or early 80s. Without further sentence reduction, she will spend the substantial majority of her remaining life incarcerated.
Her British Citizenship Status
Maxwell holds British, American, and French citizenship. The British government has not taken action to repatriate or otherwise intervene in her US incarceration.
