Sentencing
Ghislaine Maxwell was sentenced on June 28, 2022 by Judge Alison Nathan to 20 years in federal prison on five trafficking and conspiracy counts.
Judge Nathan noted:
- Maxwell’s crimes were “heinous” and “predatory”
- She could not be sentenced for Epstein’s crimes, only her own conduct
- Her cooperation or lack thereof weighed in the sentence
Maxwell had faced up to 65 years in potential prison time across the counts.
Transfer to FMC Carswell
Maxwell was transferred to FMC Carswell (Federal Medical Center, Carswell) in Fort Worth, Texas. The facility:
- Serves as the primary federal prison for women with medical needs
- Houses approximately 1,500 female inmates
- Has a medical unit for complex health matters
- Is where a number of notable female federal inmates have been housed
Prior to FMC Carswell, Maxwell was held at the MDC Brooklyn facility.
Prison Conditions
Maxwell’s attorneys and supporters have described various aspects of her imprisonment:
- She received a private cell due to stated safety concerns
- She has reportedly taught yoga and other activities to fellow inmates

Juror Misconduct Appeal
The primary appeal basis was that a juror failed to disclose being a sexual abuse survivor during voir dire. If the juror had disclosed this, he might have been dismissed. This was considered Maxwell’s strongest appellate argument.
Constitutional Arguments
Additional appeals raised:
- Claimed violations of her due process rights
- Arguments about the government’s use of the NPA as a framework
- Claims about how certain evidence was admitted
Status of Appeals
As of early 2026, Maxwell’s appeals remain pending at various stages in the Second Circuit.
The Rule 35 Motion
Maxwell’s team filed a Rule 35 motion in 2024, asking for a sentence reduction based on claimed substantial assistance provided to investigators. The nature of any assistance has not been publicly disclosed. The motion’s status was pending as of early 2026.
Projected Release
With time served and potential good behavior credits, Maxwell could be eligible for release in the late 2030s. She was born in 1961, making her approximately 76 at potential release under a full 20-year sentence.
