The prosecution’s case in Ghislaine Maxwell’s December 2021 federal trial rested primarily on the testimony of four women who described being recruited and abused as teenagers at Epstein’s properties — and Maxwell’s central role in that abuse.
Jane
“Jane” testified that she was recruited at age 14 through a music camp. Maxwell introduced her to Epstein, and the abuse began shortly after. She described Maxwell’s active participation in abuse and her role creating an atmosphere where it felt normalized. Jane testified that the abuse occurred at Epstein’s Palm Beach and New York properties and on his aircraft.
Kate
“Kate” was a British woman who testified that she met Epstein as a teenager through a family friend who worked with Epstein. Maxwell groomed her and facilitated her introduction to Epstein. Kate described sexual encounters with Epstein in his London flat and Maxwell’s involvement in orchestrating the abuse.
Carolyn
“Carolyn” testified that she was 14 when she was recruited through a Palm Beach classmate who was already in the network. She described regular visits to Epstein’s Palm Beach estate, cash payments for massage sessions, and the involvement of Maxwell and other Epstein associates. Carolyn’s testimony related to the sex trafficking counts in the superseding indictment.
Annie Farmer
Annie Farmer was the only survivor to testify using her real name. She described meeting Epstein through her older sister Maria, who worked for him. Farmer testified that Epstein and Maxwell groped her during a visit to Epstein’s New Mexico ranch in 1996 — when she was approximately 16. The New Mexico events were relevant to establishing the geographic scope of the conspiracy.
Cross-Examination
Maxwell’s defense aggressively cross-examined all four witnesses, challenging their accounts on the basis of memory, potential financial motivations from civil claims, and inconsistencies between their prior statements and trial testimony. The jury’s verdict of guilty on five of six counts indicated they found the witnesses credible.
