The Relationship
Prince Andrew (Duke of York) and Jeffrey Epstein were acquainted from approximately 1999-2000 through their mutual connection to Ghislaine Maxwell, whom Andrew knew from British social circles.
Over the following 15 years, Andrew:
- Visited Epstein’s properties on multiple occasions
- Stayed at Epstein’s New York mansion
- Traveled to Little Saint James island
- Was present at social gatherings where Epstein’s guests included trafficking victims
- Maintained the relationship even after Epstein’s 2008 sex offender conviction
The Virginia Giuffre Allegations
Virginia Giuffre (Roberts) alleged she had sexual contact with Prince Andrew on three occasions when she was 17:
- At Ghislaine Maxwell’s London townhouse (Belgravia)
- At Epstein’s New York townhouse (9 East 71st Street)
- At Epstein’s private island (Little Saint James)
The Belgravia incident was the most specific — Giuffre described a photograph of her and Andrew from that encounter, with Maxwell in the background. The photograph was real and was published widely.
Andrew denied all sexual contact with Giuffre.
The 2011 Photograph
A photograph of Andrew with his arm around a young Virginia Giuffre, with Ghislaine Maxwell visible in the background, was published widely:
- Taken at Maxwell’s Belgravia townhouse, approximately 2001
- Andrew has claimed the photograph might be fabricated, though no photographic forensics have supported this claim
- The photograph became immediately iconic in coverage of the case
The Post-2008 Walk in New York
In December 2010, Andrew was photographed walking with Epstein in New York’s Central Park shortly after Epstein completed his sentence:
- At this point Epstein was a registered sex offender
- The proximity was politically damaging
- Andrew later described this visit as being about communicating in person to end the relationship — a claim difficult to reconcile with the casual nature of the photographed stroll
The Catastrophic BBC Interview (November 2019)
Seeking to manage the crisis, Andrew agreed to an interview with Emily Maitlis of BBC Newsnight, broadcast November 16, 2019:
The interview became one of the most analyzed PR disasters in modern Britain:
- The sweating claim: Andrew stated he had a medical condition after Adrenaline Rush in the Falklands that prevented him from sweating — relevant because Giuffre described a sweaty encounter. This claim was contradicted by multiple photographs showing Andrew sweating.
- The Woking Pizza Express alibi: Andrew claimed to remember being at Pizza Express in Woking on the date of one alleged encounter because “it was a very unusual day.”
- Lack of remorse: Andrew expressed no sympathy for trafficking victims generally, instead noting his friendship with Epstein provided “excellent connectivity” — a phrase parodied extensively.
Royal Consequences
Following the BBC interview — which was broadly judged as a disaster:
- Andrew stepped back from official royal duties “for the foreseeable future” (November 2019)
- Following the Maxwell trial evidence (December 2021), the Queen stripped Andrew of military titles and royal patronages
- His status as working royal effectively ended permanently
The 2022 Civil Settlement
In January 2022, Andrew settled Giuffre’s civil suit:
- Terms approximately £12 million
- No admission of liability
- No forced cooperation with US investigators
- Followed by permanent retirement from public royal life
