Early Life
Robert Maxwell (born Ján Ludvík Hyman Binyamin Hoch) was born on June 10, 1923 in Solotvino, then part of Czechoslovakia (now Ukraine), into a Yiddish-speaking Jewish family. He was the third of seven children.
During the Holocaust:
- His parents and most siblings were killed in Auschwitz
- He escaped and eventually made his way to Britain through Hungary, France, and the French Resistance
- He served in the British Army in World War II, eventually rising to captain, and was decorated for bravery
British Media Empire
After the war, Maxwell reinvented himself as a publisher:
- Built the publishing empire Pergamon Press (scientific journals)
- Became a Labour Member of Parliament (1964–1970)
- Acquired the Mirror Group newspapers (including the Daily Mirror), making him a major media force
- Built Maxwell Communications Corporation into a global media conglomerate
The Mossad Connection
The most significant intelligence dimension of Robert Maxwell’s life was his confirmed relationship with Israeli intelligence (Mossad):
- British author Gordon Thomas documented the connection extensively
- Multiple intelligence sources have confirmed Maxwell served as a Mossad asset
- Maxwell’s role reportedly included: smuggling advanced technology to Israel, facilitating information transfers, and maintaining intelligence contacts in world capitals through his media and business positions

The PROMIS Software Affair
One of the most specific intelligence-connected episodes in Maxwell’s career:
- Maxwell allegedly participated in distributing PROMIS software — a powerful case management tool — with a backdoor installed, allowing intelligence services to monitor its use
- The backdoor-modified PROMIS was sold to foreign intelligence agencies and governments
- This gave allied intelligence (primarily NSA and Mossad) access to those agencies’ databases
Death and Its Mysteries
Robert Maxwell died on November 5, 1991, apparently falling overboard from his yacht Lady Ghislaine near the Canary Islands:
- His body was found floating in the Atlantic Ocean
- Cause of death was officially ruled a heart attack followed by drowning
- The timing was: the day after he had apparently been pressured about the pension fund scandal
- Three different investigations reached different conclusions
Theories include: accidental fall, suicide to avoid shame of pension fraud discovery, and assassination by intelligence agencies for reasons related to his intelligence activities.
The Pension Fund Fraud
After his death, it was discovered Maxwell had looted approximately £460 million from employee pension funds of Mirror Group and other companies. The scandal devastated thousands of retirees.
Impact on Ghislaine
Robert Maxwell’s death had immediate and profound consequences for Ghislaine:
- She lost her protector and primary relationship
- The family’s financial position collapsed
- She came to the United States, where she met Jeffrey Epstein
- The Epstein relationship began almost immediately after the Maxwell empire’s collapse
