The 2015 Maxwell Lawsuit
Giuffre filed a civil defamation suit against Ghislaine Maxwell in 2015 after Maxwell publicly called her a “serial liar.” This lawsuit produced years of sealed depositions and filings that were eventually unsealed in January 2024becoming one of the most consequential document repositories in the case.
Impact on the Maxwell Case
The sealed Giuffre v. Maxwell documents contained Maxwell’s depositions, Johanna Sjoberg’s account, and other victim testimony that directly supported the eventually successful criminal prosecution of Maxwell in 2021.
The 2021 Prince Andrew Lawsuit
Giuffre filed suit in New York against Prince Andrew in August 2021, alleging Andrew sexually abused her when she was 17. Using the New York Adult Survivors Act’s lookback window, the case survived Andrew’s motion to dismiss. In February 2022, Andrew settled for a reported million.
The Dershowitz Litigation
Giuffre’s accusations against Dershowitzand the resulting defamation litigationconcluded in 2023 when Giuffre issued a statement retracting the specific accusation against him.
Virginia Giuffre’s Personal Status Post-Litigation
In 2024, Giuffre publicly announced a terminal brain tumor diagnosis and filed for bankruptcy in Australia, where she has lived since marrying an Australian in 2002. Despite her personal difficulties, her legal work transformed the case.
