Jeffrey Edward Epstein (January 20, 1953 – August 10, 2019) was an American financier and convicted sex offender who ran one of the most extensive and well-connected sex trafficking operations in modern American history.
Early Life and Career
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Epstein attended local public schools before briefly studying mathematics at Cooper Union and NYU. Despite never completing his degree, he obtained a teaching position at the elite Dalton School in Manhattan in 1974.
In 1976, he joined Bear Stearns as a junior trader. By the late 1970s, he had become a limited partner — a remarkable rise for someone without a college degree. He left Bear Stearns in 1981 under unclear circumstances and founded J. Epstein & Company.
The Wexner Connection
Epstein’s primary — and reportedly only — major financial client was Leslie H. Wexner, founder of L Brands (Victoria’s Secret, Bath & Body Works, Limited). Wexner gave Epstein extraordinary power of attorney in 1991 to manage his fortune. This relationship was the source of Epstein’s social legitimacy and much of his claimed wealth.
Criminal Activity
Palm Beach police began investigating Epstein in 2005 after the parents of a 14-year-old girl reported suspicious contact. The subsequent investigation revealed a pattern of recruiting underage girls from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, grooming them, and sexually abusing them — often at his multiple properties.
The 2008 Plea Deal
Despite a years-long federal investigation, then-U.S. Attorney Alexander Acosta negotiated a sweetheart non-prosecution agreement (NPA) in 2008. Epstein pleaded guilty to two minor state charges and served just 13 months with work-release privileges. The deal shielded him and unnamed co-conspirators from federal prosecution.
2019 Arrest and Death
On July 6, 2019, Epstein was arrested by the SDNY on federal sex trafficking charges. He was denied bail and held at MCC New York. On August 10, 2019, he was found dead in his cell. The official cause was ruled suicide by hanging, though forensic evidence led independent experts to question this finding.
