JPMorgan Launches Internal Review of Epstein Banking Relationship

Following media scrutiny and legal pressure, JPMorgan Chase undertakes an internal review of its decade-long banking relationship with Jeffrey Epsteina relationship that would culminate in a 290 million dollar settlement in 2023.

In 2021, JPMorgan Chase conducted an internal review of its relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, whom the bank had serviced from approximately 2003 to 2013. The review examined compliance records, internal communications, and the circumstances under which Epstein was ultimately exited from the bank.

The review revealed extensive communications between Epstein and Jes Staleythen a senior JPMorgan executivewhich later became central evidence in litigation brought by the U.S. Virgin Islands and individual victims. Staley’s role in facilitating or perpetuating the relationship despite internal red flags was a key issue.

In June 2023, JPMorgan agreed to pay 290 million dollars to settle class-action claims brought by Epstein victims. The bank acknowledged that the relationship should have ended sooner.
