Jean-Luc Brunel, a French modeling agent who had worked with major agencies including MC2 Model Management (reportedly co-funded by Epstein) and Karin Models, was found dead in his cell at La Santé prison in Paris on the night of February 18–19, 2022. He was 76 years old.
French authorities ruled his death a suicide by hanging.
Brunel had been arrested in December 2020 at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport as he was attempting to board a flight. He was charged with rape and sexual assault of minors in connection with the French judicial investigation into Epstein’s international trafficking network. He had been held in pre-trial detention since his arrest.
French investigators had been building a case related to Epstein’s European-based operations, with Brunel as a central figure. Brunel was accused by multiple women of assault, and his name appears in Epstein’s flight logs and at properties connected to Epstein.
Virginia Giuffre had named Brunel as one of the individuals to whom she alleged she was trafficked by Epstein and Maxwell. Giuffre described being brought to Brunel and abused by him.
Brunel’s death was met with deep skepticism by some victims and advocates, given the similarity to Epstein’s own death in U.S. custody. Victims organized by attorney Sigrid McCawley expressed the view that his death deprived them of the possibility of confronting him in court and obtaining a full accounting of his activities.
His death also raises ongoing questions about whether all perpetrators in Epstein’s network will ever face legal accountability.
