On February 19, 2022, Jean-Luc Brunel was found dead in his cell at La Santé prison in Paris, where he had been held since his arrest in December 2020. French judicial authorities ruled the death a suicide by hanging.
Brunel, 76, had been charged with rape and sexual harassment in connection with French judicial investigations into Epstein-related trafficking activities conducted over decades. He had co-founded or operated modeling agencies — including MC2 Model Management — that prosecutors alleged were used to recruit victims for Epstein’s network.
His death occurred approximately 18 months after Jeffrey Epstein’s own death in U.S. custody in August 2019, which had also been ruled a suicide. The coincidence of two principal participants in the trafficking network dying in custody before trial drew significant commentary from survivors, victim advocates, and journalists.
With Brunel’s death, the prospect of a full public accounting through a French criminal trial was eliminated. Survivors who had been working with French investigators toward a prosecution lost the possibility of judicial verdict against the man many identified as central to their recruitment.
