On January 3, 2024, U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska ordered the first tranche of documents unsealed from the civil case Giuffre v. Maxwell, which had been sealed for years while the parties litigated confidentiality claims.
The initial release covered approximately 40 documents and included deposition testimony, correspondence, and discovery materials that identified dozens of individuals — including politicians, royalty, financiers, and celebrities — in connection with Epstein’s network.
The unsealing was the result of years of litigation by the Associated Press and other media organizations, who originally moved to unseal the documents in 2021. The Second Circuit Court of Appeals had ordered the district court to expedite the unsealing process.
Additional tranches of documents followed in the subsequent weeks and months, ultimately releasing approximately 250 documents total. The releases generated enormous international media coverage and renewed public and political interest in accountability for the Epstein network.
Being named in the documents did not constitute a finding of wrongdoing — names appeared in many contexts, including as people mentioned in testimony, on flight logs, or in correspondence — but many individuals named faced reputational consequences.
