Court Orders Unsealing of Epstein-Maxwell Civil Case Documents

Beginning January 3, 2024, a federal court in New York released the first batches of thousands of pages of previously sealed documents from Virginia Giuffre’s civil lawsuit against Ghislaine Maxwell, filed in 2015 and settled in 2017.

The unsealing had been ordered by Judge Loretta Preska following a years-long legal battle by journalist and media critic Michael Cernovich, who argued that the public interest in the documents outweighed continued sealing. The court agreed.

The first batches of documents included deposition transcripts, correspondence, and lists of names identifying individuals described as Epstein’s associates, guests on his properties, or persons connected to his network in various capacities. The documents named prominent figures in politics, finance, entertainment, and academia.

The releases generated global media coverage and renewed demands for accountability against living individuals identified in the documents. Some names were redacted to protect third parties; others were made public in full. Subsequent batches released throughout early 2024 added further detail.

The unsealing represented the largest disclosure of primary source material about Epstein’s network since the 2019 arrest and the subsequent trials of Ghislaine Maxwell. Victims’ advocates described the disclosures as long overdue, while some named individuals issued denials or contextualizing statements.
