Maxwell Charges — The Six Federal Counts

Ghislaine Maxwell faced six federal counts in the Southern District of New York. This page details each count, its legal basis, the underlying factual allegations, and the jury's verdict on each.

The Indictment

The original indictment filed against Ghislaine Maxwell in July 2020 charged six counts. A superseding indictment filed in March 2021 added two additional counts (sex trafficking of a minor and related conspiracy), bringing the total to eight counts; however, two of the perjury counts from the original indictment were consolidated, and the case proceeded to trial on six counts. All six covered conduct occurring in the 1990s and early 2000s, placing them within applicable statutes of limitation.

Count 1: Conspiracy to Entice Minors to Travel to Engage in Illegal Sex Acts

This conspiracy count alleged that Maxwell, together with Epstein and others, conspired to induce minors to travel across state lines for the purpose of engaging in illegal sexual activity. Verdict: GUILTY

Count 2: Enticement of a Minor to Travel to Engage in Illegal Sex Acts (Jane Doe 1)

This substantive count covered Maxwell’s specific conduct toward Jane Doe 1 (subsequently publicly identified in some media as “Jane”), a Florida minor recruited around 1994 and transported to Epstein’s properties in multiple states. Verdict: GUILTY

Count 3: Conspiracy to Transport Minors

This count charged a broader conspiracy to transport minors with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity across state lines, covering the operational transport arrangements Maxwell allegedly organized. Verdict: GUILTY

Count 4: Transportation of Minors (Jane Doe 2 and Jane Doe 3)

This substantive count covered the transportation of named minor victims. Verdict: GUILTY

Count 5: Sex Trafficking of a Minor (Carolyn)

Added in the superseding indictment, this count specifically charged Maxwell with sex trafficking of “Carolyn” (Jane Doe 4), a minor who testified to being abused beginning around 2001–2004 with Maxwell’s direct involvement. This count carried the steepest potential sentence. Verdict: GUILTY

Count 6: Perjury (Deposition, 2016)

Maxwell was charged with perjury for allegedly making false statements under oath in her 2016 civil deposition in the Giuffre v. Maxwell case—specifically denying that she had knowledge of Epstein sexually abusing minors and denying her own facilitation of abuse. Verdict: NOT GUILTY (the jury acquitted on this count, possibly because the standard of proof for perjury—establishing knowing falsity beyond a reasonable doubt—is demanding, and jurors may have credited uncertainty about Maxwell’s precise state of mind)

Sentencing

On the five guilty counts, Judge Nathan sentenced Maxwell to 20 years in federal prison and a $750,000 fine on June 28, 2022. The sentence was below the government’s requested 30–55 years but substantially above the defense’s request of time served. Maxwell was ordered to report to FCI Tallahassee.
